These flags were adopted in 1956, when Ethiopia established its own
navy. The flags became obsolete in 1975 following the end of the
Monarchy. Ethiopia lost its coastline altogether when Eritrea broke away
in 1993, and the fleet of naval vessels was taken over by the Eritrean
government; it did not maintain a navy, but instead sold all the naval
vessels to foreign buyers.

Flag the Minister of Defence used during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie, a square form of the national tricolour with an emblem in the middle conisting of a circular shield infront of the spear and a rifle in slatire and in the canton the golden imperial crown.
